Tips for a Successful Portrait Session

A portrait session is a unique opportunity to capture beautiful moments and create lasting memories. Whether it's for your family, engagement, graduation, or simply a personal photoshoot, preparing for your session is essential to ensure you get the best results. To help you achieve stunning images and a fun experience, here are our top 5 successful portrait session tips.

1. Give Yourself Time: Schedule Your Session 1-2 Months Out

One of the keys to a successful portrait session is giving yourself ample time to prepare. Scheduling your session well in advance (ideally 1-2 months ahead) allows you to choose the perfect date and ensures you have sufficient time to plan every detail.

2. Schedule Haircuts and Color 1-2 Weeks Prior to Your Session

If you plan to get a haircut or color your hair, it's best to do so about 1-2 weeks before your portrait session. Freshly styled hair not only looks its best, but it also gives you time to adjust to your new look.  Avoid new hairstyles or drastic changes right before your session to prevent any potential regrets.

3. Start Shopping for Outfits as Soon as Your Session is Scheduled

Your outfit choices play a significant role in the overall look and feel of your portraits. As soon as your session is scheduled, start planning your wardrobe. I have color palette guides that I offer to all my clients.  Pinterest is another good source for pairing wardrobes with multiple family members.  Shopping early gives you time to find the perfect outfits, make alterations if needed, and ensure everyone looks their best on the day of the shoot.

4. Try on All Your Outfits a Few Weeks Prior to Your Session (Including Families)

A few weeks before your portrait session, gather everyone involved and have a "dress rehearsal." Try on all the chosen outfits and make sure they fit comfortably and look as expected. Loving your look will make your session more enjoyable and relaxed.
